At the 2011 Racial Justice Conference, we had meaningful worship services with Duncan Teague and Rev. Chris
Buice (Tennessee Valley UU Church), and Rev. Mitra Jafarzadeh (Westside
UU Church) and Rev. Gordon Gibson. We heard Tupac Enrique Acosta, our
keynote speaker, speak about spiritual obligation and solidarity with
humankind as sources of authority when our laws seem illegal. Rev.
Alicia Forde, the UUA's Multicultural Congregations Program Coordinator,
spoke about visions of multicultural community and grounding our
multicultural work in our UU faith. Susan Williams from the Highlander
Center gave us an overview of the popular education model used at the
Highlander Center in its justice work, and a history of the
organization.
After the featured presentations, we had workshops: Rev.
Alicia Forde (Building the World We Dream About), Susan Williams
(Multicultural Partnering in Context), Rev. Gordon Gibson and Rev. Mitra
Jafarzadeh (Pilgrimage as Formation for Justice), Rev. Craig Roshaven
(UUA Witness Ministries Director, on Faith and Justice), and Theresa
Venable and Jinx Watson (Parenting in a Multicultural World).
